Former Maplewood Elementary site could once again hold Rantoul school | Education The Rantoul City Schools board has passed a resolution to sell up to $6 million in bonds for a new pre-kindergarten school near Maplewood Drive. The old Maplewood Elementary was demolished due to low enrollment after the closure of Chanute Air Force Base in 1993. The district considered various options, but leasing fell through, leading them to choose the Maplewood Drive site. The district plans to use proceeds from 1 percent sales-tax money to fund the construction and does not expect property taxes to increase.
